Age: He's one of the senior captains in the Soul Society, probably well over 1,000 years old.
Background: Aizen Sosuke is one of the oldest captains in the Soul Society. It's unknown how long he's been around, but he likely is not as old as Ukitake Juushiro and Kyoraku Shunsui, both of whom were among the first graduates from the shinigami academy founded by Yamamoto Genryusei Shikeguni 2,000 years ago. Best estimates put his age at somewhere around Unohana Retsu's, but definitely above Kaname Tousen, who he met while he was still a Vice Captain (Tousen being the only other senior captain of the group, as designated by the long sleeves on their haori).
Aizen seems characterized by three major ideals throughout his history within the Soul Society, boundless ambition, the sacrifice of morality to attain these goals, and a kindly deceptive facade to completely mask his true intentions.
It is unknown as to when, exactly, his ambitions began, but it can be inferred that even while he was a vice-captain, he was looking for valuable subordinates to serve his purposes. He ensnared the young, blind academy student Kaname Tousen, who was inspired by Aizen's "justice" and swore unswerving fealty to him.
Eventually becoming captain of the 5th division, Aizen would find another loyal subordinate in the form of Ichimaru Gin, who became Aizen's vice-captain. It was during these many long centuries that Aizen, enamored with the idea of increasing his power, mastered all of the four shinigami forms, zanjutsu, the sword arts, hakuda, the art of physical martial combat, hihou, the art of footwork and flash-step, and kidou, the demon path. During this time, he also began experimenting on hollows, knowing that the only way to grow beyond his current strength was to master the power of the hollow in addition to the power of the shinigami.
During this time, he also identified three young shinigami who might be of use to him. Abarai Renji, Hinamori Momo, and Kira Izuru all took part in a training mission in the human world. Aizen sent specially modified hollows that could hide their reiatsu after the group. The hollows, in typical fashion, slaughtered most of the students, the only survivors being the three he had been watching and Hisagi Shuuhei, who would eventually move on to serve as Vice-Captain under Kaname Tousen.
Aizen took steps to bring the three young shinigami into his clutches without them being aware of it. Of the three, Hinamori Momo proved the most tractable, and Aizen carefully manipulated her into utter obsession with him. Abarai Renji proved too rebellious, and Aizen quickly transfered him to the 11th division under Zaraki Kenpachi. The third, Kira Izuru, Aizen eventually sent to his subordinate Ichimaru Gin when Ichimaru became Captain along with Kuchiki Byakuya less than 50 years ago.
Aizen took keen interest in an invention of Kisuke Urahara, an orb known as the hougyoku that had the power to break down the barrier between shinigami and hollow. Aizen took steps to find and acquire this orb, which Urahara, who had gone missing hid within a stray soul, one Kuchiki Rukia.
When Kuchiki Rukia went missing, Aizen executed a complex plan to extract the orb from her. As she had broken Soul Society laws and pushed for Rukia's execution, Aizen entered the governing body of the Soul Society, Central 46, and slaughtered them to a man, using the powers of his zanpakutou Kyouka Suigetsu to create the illusion that they still lived and carried out business. He then sent down an execution order for Rukia, knowing that the human she had bestowed her powers to was exceptionally strong and would come to save her.
As Kurosaki Ichigo entered the Soul Society, Aizen sent Gin to meet him and ensure that he lived long enough to enter the Soul Society by another means beside the gate. Once he made his way into the Soul Society, Aizen was forced to fall back on one of his contingencies when Ichigo exceeded his expectations by not dying immediately.
Using the power of Kyouka Suigetsu to fake his own death, he then proceeded to the Central 46, where he continued to push Rukia's execution date forward, intending to use the intense flame of the Soukyoku to burn her spirit away and reveal the hougyoku hidden within.
This was again thwarted as Kurosaki Ichigo managed to defeat Kuchiki Byakuya and, along with the help of Ukitake and Kyouraku, destroy the Soukyoku. Moving out into the open at last, Aizen made his way to the Soukyoku and, using a device Urahara had developed, extracted the hougyoku manually. As the Soul Society captains converged on him, he summoned a swarm of Menos Grande to recover himself and his subordinates through use of the Negaccion. It is from this point in his story that I will be picking him up.
Personality: Aizen is cheerful, kindly and soft-spoken. He is gentle and polite, as well as piercingly intelligent.
This isn’t necessarily a façade, but it does serve to conceal aspects about Aizen that nobody really expects.
Aizen is, in reality, completely ruthless and calculating. His high intelligence gives him the ability to lay complex plans with a great many contingencies in order to best ensure his success, and although he doesn’t really admit it, instead saying those around him don’t really understand him, it could be said that Aizen is indeed actively deceptive, he calculatingly chooses to allow people to think the best of him so they may be easily manipulated.
To most, Aizen appears as an exceptionally kind, caring, and understanding individual. Underneath, while he may not be actively plotting your demise, Aizen is carefully manipulating you to achieve his own ends, whatever they may be.
To further his schemes, Aizen bears a zanpakutou that compliments his abilities. Bearing the name Kyouka Suigetsu, Aizen has the power to deceive the senses of those who have witnessed his zanpakutou’s release, creating completely false images and perceptions.
